This Master of Science Degree program offered by the School of Energy and Power Engineering aims to offer a rigorous and specialized training program to candidates with interests in the fields of nuclear science and technology. It offers students the opportunity of having a solid and rewarding graduate study career that will lead to the acquirement of sound foundation for pursuing higher academic degree programs and the development of skills and ability in nuclear science and technology.
2. Length of Study
The full-time scheme lasts for two years, consisting of four academic semesters.
Students must successfully complete at least 32 credits of course work, including 10 credits earned from thesis work.
The thesis is considered to be the centerpiece of a student's graduate experience. The Master's thesis is essentially a research apprenticeship under the supervision of a faculty member, and as such is usually the major contributor to the student's professional maturation.

Fundamentals of Nuclear Reactor Fuels – A Materials Perspective
(by Professor Yun, Di)
Nuclear reactor fuel performance is of great technical importance as nuclear fuels suffer from many severe environmental conditions such as high temperature, high stress, high corrosive and high irradiation environments, etc. In order to predict the failure of nuclear fuels within the currently operating nuclear reactors and to design new fuels with improved safety performance parameters, systematic understanding of the fuel failure mechanisms and the associated underlying physics is necessary.
In this course the fundamental aspects of nuclear reactor fuels are comprehensively and systematically introduced. The course is comprised of two parts. The first part reviews selected aspects of statistical thermodynamics, crystallography, chemical thermodynamics and physical metallurgy, which lay the foundation for understanding nuclear fuel behaviors. The second part covers the different physical processes and phenomena that are associated with nuclear fuels under reactor irradiation conditions. Specifically, fission gas release, solid and gaseous fission product swelling, plasticity, creep and restructuring of the fuel pellet are introduced together with irradiation embrittlement, irradiation hardening and irradiation induced creep and swelling of the cladding materials. The teaching of this course puts emphasis on introducing the basic concepts as well as utilizing mathematical tools to analyze different physics phenomena of nuclear reactor fuels. Through the learning of this course the students will have a sound background for understanding nuclear fuel behaviors and applying such knowledge to solving real problems.
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport and have been awarded a recognized Bachelor's degree.
