Founded in Shanghai in 1896 as the Nanyang Public College, Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China. In the late 1990's, it was among the first group of universities selected for the participation in both "Project 211" and "Project 985". Xi'an Jiaotong University offers a range of high-quality courses taught by leading academics who are also engaged in research at the leading edge of their fields.
The predecessor of Xi'an Jiaotong University is Nanyang Public University that was founded in Shanghai in 1896; In 1955, the State Council decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi'an.
The School of Medicine of Xi'an Jiaotong University, which used to be the School of Medicine of National Peking University, founded in 1937. It was renamed Xi'an Medical University in 1985. It has gradually established a complete administrative system for educating and training both undergraduate and graduate students.
