Shandong University is located in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province. Jinan is famous for its long history and splendid culture, with a total population of over 5, 400, 000, of which about 2 million live in the metropolitan area. Jinan has been well-known as "the City of Springs", having within its downtown district 72 famous springs, including the four major spring clusters named Baotu Spring, Zhenzhu Spring, Heihu Spring, and Wulongtan Spring respectively. The Baotu Spring has long enjoyed the fame as "the First Spring in the Country". The crystal clear water from the various springs flows northward to converge in Daming Lake, where the rippling expanse of water sparkles like a silver chain. In the south of the city stands the Qianfo Hill, a well known Buddhist holy place. The hill and the lake add radiance and beauty to each other, creating the unique charm of Jinan.

Located on the eastern coast and at the lower reaches of the Yellow River, Shandong Province is one of the most prosperous coastal regions in China as well as the birthplace of the time-honored Qilu culture. It was in this region that the great ancient thinker Confucius was fostered, along with Confucianism as his doctrine. Within Shandong province are plenty of tourist attractions, ranging from the well-preserved residence of Confucius in Qufu, which was designated by UNESCO as both "the World's Natural Heritage" and "the World's Natural Cultural Heritage"; Mount Tai, a historically mountain in China; Linzi, which was the capital of the Qi State about 3,000 years ago; to the relics of the residences of some ancient sage-thinkers like Mencius, Sunzi and Mozi.

Shandong is located in the subtropical zone, with an average annual temperature of 11-14C(51.8-57.2F) and an annual rainfall of 550-590mm. The average annual temperature in Jinan is 15C(59F).

Shandong boasts one of China's most efficient province-wide traffic systems, with most places linked through superhighways or railroads. In addition, the international airports at Jinan and Qingdao, the seaports at Weihai, Yantai, and Qingdao also contribute to facilitating travel.
