The faculty was established on the basis of the former Exploration Department of Beijing Petroleum College in 1953 with its first name: Department of Exploration of Beijing Petroleum College.
The Faculty was established in 1953 and has been one of the four main faculties of the university ever since. It undertook reconstruction in July 2001 and kept its present name.

Established in Apr. 1995, the School of Business Administration now has three departments, one institute and an experiment center, namely, Department of Management, Department of Economy and Trade, Department of Accounting & Finance and Institute of Petroleum Economy.
The Department of Computer Science and Technology was founded in Oct. 1996 as a new extension of the university. It offers 1 BSc program in Computer Science and Technology, 3 MSc programs in Computer Application, Computer Software & Theory and Computer System Architecture and 1 doctoral program in Computer Technology and Resource Information Engineering.
The English Department is the youngest among all the faculties and departments in the university. It has a faculty of 63, including 5 full professors, 18 associate professors and 38 lecturers. The department provides public English programs to all the undergraduates, postgraduates and doctors in the university and it also offers BA and MA programs to English majors.
The department grew out of the former Department of Basic Sciences in 2000. The courses offered by the department are taken by all the students of every discipline in the university. There are two teaching and research sections and two laboratories: Mathematics and Physics and the Mathematics Lab and the Physics Lab.
The department of the Social Sciences and Humanities is as old as the university and its name changed several times, from the Political Theory Teaching Group, Social Science Division to the present name. The department is responsible for the teaching of Marxism Theory and other humanity courses besides research in social sciences.

The Department of physical education was founded in the year 2002 on the basis of the former Physical education division. Currently it is well staffed with 24 faculty members working in four branch offices, physical education office, physical education research group, training research group and center of physical fitness test.

The School of Continuing Education of CUP is offering various continuing education programs to petroleum industry and to the public for multi-disciplinary continuing education. There are two teaching bases: one is located in Xueyuan Road, Haidian District of Beijing, the other in Fuxue Road, Changping District, Beijing, with training partners and branches covering many parts of the country act as extension of the bases for training senior petroleum engineers and technicians.
The Distance-learning Department of the university was founded in 1996, and upgraded to the Adult Education School in 2002, which provides degree courses for higher education.
