The candidate is required to make an extensive literature survey in the field of intended research to prepare a kickoff report. The literature survey is also a good chance to practice technical English, especially improve reading proficiency.

2. A kickoff report of no less than 5000 words must be submitted in the fourth semester, which contains a survey of the literature, significance of the topic, problems to be studied, key points and special features, expected results and possible innovations.

3. Assessment on the kickoff report is made by a group of no less than 3senior teachers before the candidate can proceed with the research.

4. In the middle of the research, the candidate should review, and provide a report on, his/her work carried out according to the plan in order to make sure that the research goes properly. A warning is given if major discrepancy from the plan is found.

5. Before the thesis can be submitted for defense, it is subjected to an anonymous review process, which assesses the draft for originality, academic quality, correctness, and practicality. A preliminary defense is organized two months before the formal defense can be held. A panel gives an assessment to the draft, and decides whether or not the candidate can proceed for completion of the research. In case of failure, the candidate will be given three to six months to revise the thesis before he/she can re-submit the work.
