The school statistics of SWUFE has a history of more then fifty years, it is one of the earliest departments to enroll students major in statistics among Chinese financial colleges, the first school to offer doctor's degree of statistics and econometrics in western China, and also the first one to set up postdoctoral course.
Business administration is one of the three key subjects promoted by the 211 Project, in hopes of training highly specialized and innovative business leaders to guide economic construction and reform in southwestern China. To achieve this, the MBA program at SBA has designated four academic concentrations: international enterprise; capital operation, financial enterprise management; and marketing management. In addition to compulsory courses for each concentration students are required to select from a core shared across all concentrations.
Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, as one of China's key universities under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and one of the key developing universities of the national "Project 211", was founded in 1952. The university is situated near Du Fu Memorial Hall in Chengdu which is a Famous Historical and Cultural City. After 50 years' development, the school now features an educational system of economics and management being the main body with finance being the focus.
School of Economics has a long history and deep academic roots. The predecessor of the School, the Department of Economics, was established in 1960. A well-known economist Professor Chen Baoyin who is China's first translator of "Capital" of the Chinese version and another well-known economist Professor Peng Dixian has engaged in the research and education in economics in the subject of political and economic. They have done important pioneering work for the early reseach and dissemination of the Marxist economics in China. And also, the older generation of leaders, such as national well-known economist, professor Liu Shibai and professor Wang Shuyun, have done fruitful research and exploration in the area of the socialist market economy theory and practice, and the reform and development of economic system.
The School of Public Finance and Taxation (SPFT) has longest history among all departments inside Southwest University of Finance and Economics, which was founded in 1952. Many famous professors and scholars, such as Chen Yingbao, Li Rui, Xu Tingxing, Zhuo Zhisheng, Tan Bengyun, and Zhang Guogan, joined SPFT from over 17 finance and economy institutes in southwest China. SPFT was formed in 1991 as one of the first public finance and taxation institutes in China .
SWUFE School of Law is one of the key departments under the State "211" projects.
One of Swufe's precursors is Zhengyang Law Institution, which was founded in 1949 and the director was Juzheng, the dean of Judicial Yuan of Republic of China; the vice-director was Xiaqin, the dean of the Supreme Court of Republic of China.
The School of Public Administration (SPA) was founded in 2001 based on the former department of Politics. It makes use of the traditional advantage of Economics and Administration science at SWUFE and integrates educational resources including Political Science, law, sociology and Demography.

The College of International Education of SWUFE was established in 2004. It is the combination of the former Foreign Students Education Center and the SWUFE Training Center for Personnel Working/Studying Abroad.
The Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM) at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE), Chengdu, China, was established in 2006. RIEM is dedicated to high quality teaching and research in economics, finance, and management. The goal of the institute is to become an internationally acknowledged research center and a leading think tank in China .
