The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was established in 1910, initially called the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Public Institution of Medicine. The name of the Hospital has been changed several times. It became the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen Medical College in 1957. In 1985, it was renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences. On October 26th, 2001, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences merged with Sun Yat-sen University and the Hospital became the First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU.
As a 3A hospital (the top level in China), the Hospital is the largest and the most comprehensive one among all affiliated hospitals of SYSU, as well as one of the largest hospitals in the country. It comprises 2 parts, the headquarter in Yuexiu District of Guangzhou, the Huangpu Division in eastern Guangzhou, which puts emphasis on orthopedics and trauma first aid. The Hospital is also an important base for medical treatment, teaching, research, preventive care and rehabilitation in South China. It is well known for its sophisticated techniques and excellent reputation in China and throughout Southeast Asia.
The Hospital aspires to improve its teaching, research and medical practices through continuous collaboration with institutions and organizations at home and abroad, and takes advantage of China's open policy and Guangzhou's geographic position to develop into a modern unit ranking amongst the top hospitals in China.

Staff
There are 2,365 registered staff members, including 2,124 health professionals, 125 professors, 322 associate professors, 823 attending doctors, 68 supervisors for PhD students and 239 supervisors for students in Master's Degree programs.
Departments and Institutes
The clinical departments are divided into 17 Grade II disciplines and 50 Grade III disciplines. There are 16 departments specializing in key disciplines. The discipline of Nephrology, General Surgery and Neurology are national key disciplines, and Obstetrics, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Urology, Oto-rhino-laryngology and Endocrinology are provincial key disciplines. Many social medical treatment organizations, such as the Rehabilitation Center of the WHO, were established in the Hospital. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber boasts the longest history and the largest scale in South China, and the Mega Centers for Hemo-purification, Peritoneal Dialysis and Extracorporeal Counter-pulsation are also the largest in the country. Various ICUs provide reliable guarantees for recuperating patients in critical condition.
The Hospital undertakes approximately 60% of the clinical teaching work in SYSU and has dozens of qualified departments to offer PhD and Master's Degree programs. The Hospital has 1 national on-going medical education base, 14 training bases for the Ministry of Health, 2 research institutes, 6 clinical treatment research centers and 14 clinical research laboratories. Amongst these, the Nephrological Laboratory is the key laboratory of Guangdong Province and the Ministry of Health.
Facilities
The Hospital has 1,850 open beds. The annual average number of outpatients and emergency cases is around 2,760,000; the annual number of operations totals 21,000 and the number of discharges is more than 48,000. The occupancy rate of beds is over 101%. For a long period of time, the Hospital has made full use of its advanced technology and has applied it in diagnosis and treatment to cure and recuperate patients with serious, complicated and rare diseases. These numerous prominent achievements have filled many gaps of medical sciences in the country.
Programs
The Hospital undertakes more than 25 on-going medical education programs every year. It offers clinical training programs for doctors and public health practitioners across the nation and from foreign countries, 1,000 of whom are accepted for medical training every year. At present, more than 600 students are enrolled in graduate programs.
Achievements
In the past 10 years, the Hospital has won 86 prizes for scientific advancement from the nation or Guangdong Province, and has undertaken 694 research projects, the majority of which are granted by the National Natural Science Foundation. The Hospital also edits and publishes works in national key medical journals, including the Chinese Journal of Nephrology, the Chinese Journal of Microsurgery, the Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the Chinese Journal of Neurological and Psychological Diseases, the Journal of Image and Interventional Radiology and Modem Clinical Nursing, etc. The number of undertaken projects, as well as the number of published papers, both rank top amongst all hospitals in the country.
Currently, 30 experts in the Hospital are appointed as senior leaders, members of standing committees or vice-chairmen of various specialized branches in the China Medical Association, or chairpersons of specialized branches in the Guangdong Medical Association.
Exchange and Cooperation
At present, the Hospital has established academic exchange and collaboration with hospitals in more than 20 countries or regions, including USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Holland, Sweden, Hong Kong, and Macao. The Hospital holds numerous national academic meetings and more than 10 international academic conferences each year.
The Second Affiliated Hospital, also named the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, is situated on the picturesque bank of the Pearl River in downtown Guangzhou. It was initially founded as an ophthalmic hospital in 1835 by Dr. Peter Parker, an American medical missionary and diplomat who graduated from Yale College in 1831. It was the first hospital to offer western medicine and one of the birthplaces of modern medical sciences in China. For 170 years, the Hospital's medical advances have been associated with the pioneering and innovation of health care in the country.

There are now over 2,100 employees in the Hospital, including 800 nurses. In addition, there are 600 medical staff members, including 50 professors, 182 associate professors and many other specialists. Specialty and Achievements
The Hospital's specialty areas, including endocrinology, cardiology, gynecology, pediatric care, hepato-biliary surgery, orthopedics, urological surgery, otolaryngology, dentistry and maxillofacial surgery, rank at the forefront both in Guangdong Province and South China in recent years. As a hospital affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University, it conducts many hospital-based research programs, with over 10 million RMB research funds annually from all levels of public research supports. It provides education and training for future health care practitioners at home and abroad.
Each year, the hospital accepts approximately 30,000 inpatients and receives almost 1.2 million clinical visits in its outpatient programs on the main campus and its branch center in Haizhu District of Guangzhou. Its emergency service handles nearly 100,000 visits annually. Each year the surgical staff performs more than 10,000 operations, and the obstetric service delivers approximately 1,000 babies.
In the last decade, many recognitions and awards have been granted to the Hospital. It is the first hospital in the region to be categorized as a 3A Hospital by the Ministry of Health in China. It appears frequently on the "Model Hospitals" lists of the province and the country. The Hospital has also been granted the recognition as one of the Advanced Units in the medical field by the Ministry of Health in China.
Founded in 1971, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a general hospital that offers a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient healthcare services and is dedicated to teaching and scientific research. The Ministry of Health awarded the Hospital for achieving the status of a 3A Hospital, National Infant-Specialist Hospital and Highest Standards Hospital in Guangdong Province.

Of its 1,800 staff, 839 are healthcare professionals and over 180 have senior academic titles. The Hospital has 40 clinical departments, 9 medical technology sections and 29 inpatient departments. With nearly 1,000 beds, the outpatient and emergency flow in 2005 reached 1,150,000, the annual discharge cases add up to 19,000, and the annual inpatient surgical treatments surpass 13,000, with an average 15.5-day hospital stay. In addition, the average daily outpatients and emergency flow totals over 4,000.
Being a major teaching base responsible for clinical training, the Hospital undertakes clinical teaching work in various specialties for undergraduates, graduates as well as advanced students from different parts of the country. The staff members for postdoctoral studies include 17 qualified supervisors for PhD programs, 90 for Master's programs. Moreover, the Hospital has 4 national drug clinical research bases, 4 provincial scientific research centers, 3 key disciplines in Guangdong Province, 1 key junior discipline and 4 hospital key disciplines. It also has a key research laboratory in Guangdong Province - the Liver Disease Research Laboratory.
As a primary medical institution specializing in treatment of liver diseases and scientific research in South China, the Hospital has cultivated a unique practice, both domestically and internationally, which combines internal medicine with surgery, and integrates western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It therefore treats liver patients in different stages with "integrated" medical practices. The Liver Transplant Center is the leading unit of both the Organ Transplant Center in Guangdong Province and the Organ Transplant Research Institute of Sun Yat-sen University. The Center has performed nearly 1,000 liver transplant operations, taking the nationwide leading position in terms of quantity, success and survival rate, which is almost aligned with that of developed countries.

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center
Located in the city of Guangzhou, Cancer center of Sun Yat-sen University was founded in the year 1964 and includes the cancer hospital and cancer research institute. After 40 years of continuous joint effort by the successive leaders and the staffs, the center now holds the glory of being the largest institution for prevention and treatment of cancer in Southern China incorporating medical services, clinical teaching, research and disease prevention. The center has been entertaining patients from many Southeast Asian countries and China as a whole.

The Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University holds the pride of being the biggest specialty hospital of cancer in Southern China. The center now has become a modern medical service provider with about 1100 in-patient beds and over 1500 staff members with more than 200 senior specialists. In 2005, the center attends about 300 000 out-patients and 25000 in-patients. At present the center is set up with all necessary clinical units: Department of Head and Neck, Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Thoracic, Abdominal, Liver and Billiary, Gynecologic, Medical, Radiotherapy, Biotherapy, Endoscope and Laser, Traditional Chinese medicine, Anesthesiology, ICU etc. and technical units: Radio-diagnosis, Pathology, laboratory medicine, central laboratory, blood bank, ultrasonology, etc. The center is equipped with PET/CT, double helix CT, MRI, color Doppler ultrasound, DSA, ECT, automatic analyzer, automatic pathological image analyzer, linear accelerator, TPS radiotherapeutic planer, conformal radiotherapy (CRT) system, X-ray Knife, late radiotherapy system etc.
The common ways of diagnosis and treatment of cancer such as Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, intervention therapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy and Chinese medicine are all available in the center. The level of diagnosis and treatment of cancer and the five year survival of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the center has reached the most advanced level in the world. The long term follow-up results of many cancers have reached the topmost in the country which includes hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, pulmonary carcinoma, esophageal carcinoma, breast carcinoma, cervical carcinoma, ovarian carcinoma, lymphomas and carcinoma of head and neck. In 1998, the center began to adapt the single disease - multiple discipline system for the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers so that every patient can get the optimal treatment as per his/her real condition.
The Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University is also one of the earliest research institutes for cancer research in China. The institute lays great emphasis on prevention and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma from the aspects of epidemiology, pathology, immunology and molecular biology and has achieved noted accomplishments.
The center has 43 Ph.D. degree supervisors and many young and energetic specialists who make up the pioneer of the center. Since 1983, a lot of research projects have been supported by National Science and Technology Plan, National Excellent Young fund, National 863 plan, National 973 plan, National Natural Science Fund, American CMB Fund etc. Meanwhile, Laboratory of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma was identified as Guangdong key laboratory whereas department of medical oncology was identified as national drug research center for clinical trials. Low melting point lead technique and conformal radiothapeutic technique invented firstly by our center have broadly been used in radiotherapy. The drug sensitivity test in vivo and in vitro suitable for individual chemotherapy and the study of anti-radiation drugs have also shown perfect efficacy.
The center owns a VIP in-patient department which provides especial medical service for the patients all over the world. In the last more than 10 years, the VIP department has attended 60, 000 patients from HK, Macao, Taiwan and 33 countries. The center gives much priority to participating in academic exchanges with foreign institutions. It is a sister hospital to the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in USA.
The center's collaborative lab with Karolinska Institute in Sweden was setup in 2004. We are making bigger efforts to realize our goal of becoming the best cancer center at home and well-known cancer center abroad.
EDUCATION
The Cancer Center is one of the teaching hospitals of Sun Yat-sen University and one of the doctorate training center authorized by the State Council. A total of 74 doctor-degree students and 258 master-degree students have graduated from our center. In addition, the center offers an one-year in-service training course of oncology every year, trusted by Guangdong Provincial Health Department and the Ministry of Health, for the doctors and different kinds of technicians in the cancer control. More than 3000 people from all China graduated since 1964.
The Fifth Affiliated Hospital
The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a comprehensive hospital with modern medical services, scientific research and education, meticulous health care and rehabilitation. It is also the largest hospital in Zhuhai, Guangdong, which occupies a total area of 220,000㎡.

There are 46 departments in the Hospital, including 36 clinical departments, 7 medical technology departments, 1 emergency department and 1 outpatient department. Among them, Nephrology, Medical Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine, Imaging Department, Cardiovasology, Urology, General Surgery and Organ Transplantation are key departments. The Hospital is outfitted with Medicine Laboratory Center, Animal Experiment Center, Organ Transplantation Research Center, Research Institution of Oncology, Renal Diseases Research Laboratory, Cardiovascular Research Laboratory and so on. It also has microanalysis laboratory on virus detection, molecular biology, gene diagnosis, cytokinetics, hemorheology and ingredient analysis, titer of blood medicine, tissue matching and flow cytometry, etc.

The Hospital is outfitted with the most advanced medical diagnostic and treatment facilities such as Spiral CT, ECT, DSA, Microsurgery Endoscope, Linear Accelerator, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Li Co60 Radiator, Colored Doppler, Ultrasonic Wave Apparatus, Endoscope, Automatic Biochemical Analytical Apparatus, Ultrasonic Knife, Rapidly Germ Culture System, Anesthesia Apparatus, Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber and advanced ICU, CCU, RCU, etc. The total investment of the hospital facilities is up to 200 million RMB.
There are 1,300 beds in the Hospital. The annual average number of outpatient is about 500,000, the number of inpatient is 20,681, and the annual average of operations is about 11,115. A lot of highly difficult surgery operations, as well as highly complicated treatment can be done in the Hospital. For example, the surgery operations of renal transplantation, liver transplantation, liver-kidney joined transplantation, hematopoiesis stem cell transplantation, pancreas transplantation, re-joint of severed limbs and fingers and toes, intracardiac operation under direct vision with external circulation, pace-maker implantation, PTCA (percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty), angiography of coronary arteries, CASI (coronary artery stent installment), as well as the complicated surgery of congenital heart disease, interventional surgery of coronary artery, hepatectomy for huge block of liver cancer, partially hepatectomized and extirpation of adrenal pheochromocytoma. The Hospital also provides tumor interventional therapy, cataract phacoemulsification and introcular lens implantation, microsurgery with endoscope, such as cystoscope, thoracoscope, laparoscope, bile duct endoscope and hysteroscope, tumor chemiotherapy and radiotherapy with Linear Accelerators, Co60 Radiator and deep X-ray, etc.
Staff and Students
The Hospital has over 1,300 medical staff, including a team of over 200 medical professors and 474 nurses, of whom 4 are chief nurses and 38 are charging nurses. It has 6 tutors for MD degrees and 27 tutors for MM degrees. A lot of professors have got outstanding achievements in medical field at home and abroad. Most department directors or academic leaders have got the experiences of studying or working abroad. The Hospital is also the medical foundation of education. It takes up the training task for postgraduate student and undertakes a lot of key research projects. Nowadays, there are 22 PhD candidates and 55 master's degree students.
Exchange and Cooperation
The Hospital has already established broad international collaboration. Several national short-termed academic classes are held every year. It has established the International Pathological Diagnosis Center with Milan University of Italy, the Research Center on Nephropathy and Early Detec-tion and Intervention Program for Chronic Renal Disease with the Interna-tional Society of Nephrology, the International Training Center on Dialysis with NKF of Singapore. It has also set up Early Action Plan for Defending Lung Cancer with Cornel University of America and has established collaboration on rehabilitation with the Collaboration of European Rehabili-ration Union. In order to make the Hospital one of the most modern and comprehensive and to provide first-class medical service and scientific management, the staff of the Hospital goes all out to use their good skills and to devote them-selves to the care of the patients.
The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is located in Yuancun, Tianhe District of Guangzhou. It was formerly the Sixth People's Hospital of Guangzhou, founded in 1956 as a general hospital.
