Library
Established in October, 1952, the Library of East China University of Science & Technology (ECUST) is under direct auspice of the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China. Through 50 years of construction and expansion, the Library has become a research library of multi-disciplines ranging from chemistry and chemical engineering to the combination of science, engineering, management and liberal arts. The Library has a total floor space of 19,648 square meters, providing space for 1601 seats and 2,450,000 volumes of books in several languages. The newly completed digital libraryhas a disc array containing over 40 disc databases such as CA, EI as well as network mirror image (MSI) databases; with a total capacity of 16TB, the system is easily accessible to all readers at ECUST.
Shanghai Centre of E-literature Retrieval System for Postgraduate Students (SCELRSPS), Shanghai Centre of International University Textbooks (SCIUT), Centre of Network Learning (CNL) and Centre of Foreign Language Learning (CFLL) are based in the Library to facilitate study and research of their users and provide them with helpful services of network facilities and consultation. The Library has set up a mechanism for sharing the information resources with its counterparts throughout the country and thus provides its readers with abundant electronic resources.
Established with funds from both Shanghai Municipal Educational Commission and ECUST, SCIUT, with the most up-to-date technologies and facilities in five network systems and one reading room, provides first-class services to teachers and researchers in Shanghai and other parts of the country.
SCELRSPS, co-funded by Shanghai Municipal Education Fund, Shanghai Academic Degree Bureau and ECUST, owns nearly 100 microcomputers. It has been one of postgraduates' education bases in Shanghai.

CNL is proud of its assistant software of Chinese and foreign textbooks and over 2,500 foreign language audiovisual learning materials for students and staff to use in an excellent environment.
Sport Facilities
ECUST's Meilong campus occupies an area of 740,000 square meters with a total constructed area of 600,000 square meters, including 6,870 square meters of indoor facilities and 35,447 square meters of outdoor facilites for a wide range of athletic activities. The indoor facilities consists of two standard basketball courts, one multi-function gymnasium, one 50-meter indoor shooting range, and a table tennis building. Outdoor facilities include a standard track and field with a 400-meter plastic runway and a natural turf football court, 10 outdoor standard basketball courts, 4 outdoor tennis courts, an artificial turf football court, and a swimming pool.
There are two fitness centers: the testing center and the training center. The training center provides diversified, custom and professional indoor and outdoor fitness practice and training services. The Center has special areas for strength training, dynamic cycling, fitness testing, table tennis and aerobic exercise; its members enjoy free physical testing, regular recreational activities, professional coaching and guidance, priority uses of available sporting equipment and facilites.

Shopping
There are many stores on the university campus where you can find most items for daily uses. Shanghai Education Supermarket, with two stores on the campus, is a part of the supermarket system that is present in every college and university in Shanghai; it has wide selections of water, soft drinks, beers, coffees, instant noodles, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet papers, and other goods. Other stores focus on selling varieties of products and services such as CD/DVD-ROM, MP3 players, electronic dictionary and refill card for mobile phone. The larger Shanghai Education Supermarket store, two fruit stores and two hair care shops, and several other small stores are conveniently located on the first floor of the 20th student dormitory.
If you are shopping for clothes or looking for more diversified products, you may go to one of several large shopping malls within walking distance from the university. Bailian Nanfang Shopping Center, the largest of them, is the home to the French retailer Carrefour, many boutique shops of domestic and international brands as well as restaurants of all tastes. The shopping center is about 30 minutes away near Lianhua Road Subway Station; you can take bus No. 720 or ride a bicycle to get there faster. There is a closer large retailer Trust-mart, 10 min walking distance at the cross of West Shangzhong Road and Old Huming Road, where you may get a better deal for some products.
