The College of Literature has a history of 50 years. Thanks to the efforts of several generations, especially with the introduction of a large number of high-caliber talents as well as large amount of funds input by Beijing municipal government in recent 10 years, the College achieved remarkable leap forward.
The non-pedagogic orientation is a “Nurturing and Research Base of National Talents on History” approved by Ministry of Education, implementing a chained education program of “undergraduate-master-doctor” to produce high-level specialists in the history study and teaching. Of the non-pedagogic orientation, there are two majors, one is Beijing’s Culture Development and Management cultivating compound professionals for the city’s culture development and management programs; the other is World History which is aimed to foster world history specialists with good foreign language skills.
The College of Politics and Law has a staff of 80 people consisting of 17 professors, 28 associate professors, with 20 teachers who are PhD or PhD candidates. Among these teachers, 9 have the qualifications of PhD candidate supervisor, 35 have the qualifications of postgraduate supervisor.
The College of Education Science took setting up learning groups among students as an important goal of its student’s work and explored the learning group communication platform adaptable to the growth of university students on this basis, and made clear that communication is an integral party in the growth of university students.
The college has 7 departments, namely, Department of English Education, Department of English Language and Literature, Department of Russian, Department of Japanese, Department of French, Department of German and Department of Spanish. The Department of English Education is aimed to bring up teachers while the Department of English Language and Literature and others are non-pedagogic oriented.
The College of Music of CNU used to be the Music Department of Beijing Normal Institute established in March 1964. It was renamed as Department of Music of Capital Normal University in 1992. To achieve more development in new century, the college was officially set up in March 2003 and named as the College of Music of CNU.
The College of Fine Arts originated from the Department of Fine Arts and was established in 2001, diversified into a comprehensive fine arts college combining pedagogic and non-pedagogic orientations from the original single fine arts education specialty (pedagogic orientation).
The Department of Mathematics of CNU was founded in 1954. Over the past 50 years, the department has turned out over 10,000 mathematics teachers for middle schools in Beijing and professionals in various sectors. Since 1981, the department has nurtured 300 masters and doctors in "Fundamental Mathematics " and "Applied Mathematics"
In July 1954, the Department of Physics opened a one-year specific training course of physics; then in 1955 the department was officially established with undergraduate courses and two-year junior college courses. In 1970, it was merged with Department of Chemistry to form the Department of Industrial Basis. In 1972, the Department of Industrial Basis was abolished and restored to Department of Physics.
The Department of Chemistry of CNU was established in 1954 and with the efforts of several generations over the past 50 years, the Department of Chemistry has achieved remarkable advancement in the areas of scale, discipline build-up, research level, etc.
The College of Life Science has the Departments of Biology Science, Cell Genetics Science, Physiological Chemistry Science, Microbiology Science and Management Center of Laboratories as well as the Biological Information Center. At the moment, it has three specialties: Biology Science (pedagogic orientation), Biology Science (non-pedagogic orientation) and Bio-technology (non-pedagogic orientation) plus one Beijing Fostering and Research Base of Life Science Professionals.
The College of Resource Environment and Tourism was originated from the geography specialty opened in 1954 and then changed into geography department in 1957. On July 19, 2001, it was renamed as the College of Resource Environment and Tourism.
The College of Information Engineering originates from the Department of Computer Science Education which was formed by the original computer research section of Mathematics Department, the computing center and research institute of multimedia technology applications.
Teachers'professional development is one of the most important topics of educational innovation as well as the focus of the research of teachers’ training. As more and more schools and universities are incorporating information and communications technology into their classes, the teachers expect to teach effectively and efficiently by supporting the learners with digital resources. So ICT oriented teachers’ professional development has become a hotspot in the educational circle.
On September 9, 1999, the original Beijing Tongzhou Normal School and Beijing No.3 Normal School were merged into Capital Normal University, establishing the College of Primary Education of CNU, which aimed to foster bachelor-degree teachers for primary schools. In 2003, it became one of the key disciplines of CNU. Over the past five years, it has brought up 1,805 bachelor and junior college degree teachers for primary schools, being the only high level teachers' nurturing base for primary schools in Beijing.
