Top↑Program Description

English department is founded in 1964, aiming to cultivate students with solid English language foundation and extensive scientific culture knowledge. The main focus of the English department is to develop translating, researching, teaching and management skills, which enable the graduates work in departments like foreign affairs, culture, publishing, education, scientific research and tourism as English professionals.

Knowledge and abilities that graduates should acquire:

1. Familiarity with the relevant guideline, policy, laws, current situation of China
2. Basic knowledge of linguistics, literature and related humanities science and technology
3. Solid basic knowledge of linguistics and good listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating abilities
4. Know our own national conditions and social science and culture in English speaking countries
5. Good Chinese expression ability and basic research skills
6. Practical use of the second foreign languages
7. Mastering the basic methods and means to search and collect documents, materials and information; having certain scientific research ability

The main focus of English department is to develop undergraduate education. Also admit the postgraduates major in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, English language and literature.

Currently there are 36 in-service teachers, including 10 professors (2 doctoral supervisors), retain 6-8 foreign teachers, also there are 17 teachers hold the doctorate diploma. About 90% teachers with master’s degree diploma have the study abroad experiences.

Basic English, Senior English, Selected Readings of Newspaper & Magazine, English Listening, Speaking and Video, Oral English, English Writing, Translation Theory and Practice, Introduction of Linguistics, History of Literature and Literature Readings Selection of Main English Speaking Countries, National Countries Condition of Main English Speaking Countries.

Western Culture, History of Western Civilization, Language and Culture, Stylistics, English History, Scientific English, English Film Appreciation, Business English, Financial English, Tourism English, The Second Foreign Language, Brief Western Economy, International Economy, Introduction of Finance, Laws of Foreign Banks.

Main Practical Teaching Concepts

Social Survey, Language Practice, Various Foreign Language Contests, Military Training, Graduate thesis.

Main Professional Practice

Study practices (including exhibitions, oral interpretation and written translation), Work practices (intern in the Ministries of the State Council, news organization, company, etc.)

Top↑Entry Requirements

• Applicant should be a senior high school graduate or with equivalent schooling in the age bracket of 18-50,with an HSK certificate (level 6 or above). (Classes will be taken together with Chinese students.)

1. Certificate of HSK
   For applicants of Chinese Language major and Chinese Language and Culture major:Level 3 or above. For those applying to take classes with Chinese students: HSK Level 6 or above
2. Photocopy of valid passport
   With name, passport number & expiration date, and photo included
3. Passport photo
   A recent passport-sized photo of the applicant
4. Certificate/diploma of highest education
   Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.
5. Academic transcript of highest education
   Original transcript of academic record.
6. Valid identity document of the applicant's emergency contact person
   A photocopy of the ID of the emergency contact (can be a license, official ID of Chinese citizen or foreigner).
7. Letter of recommendation
   Reference letter from applicants' former teacher.
