Harbin Engineering University is defining her distinctive position in the nation's development strategy by specializing in shipping industry, ocean exploration and nuclear application. By also leading a series of reforms in teaching, scientific research and information management systems, Harbin Engineering University is expanding her role as China's premier comprehensive international university now and into the 21st century.

Harbin Engineering University (HEU) is located at the Coast of Songhua River in Harbin, a famous city with beautiful scenery in the northeastern of China.With a glorious history, HEU, which is subordinate to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China. HEU has had the honor of being listed in the national “211 project”，becoming the largest scale of personnel training bases and important scientific research base in the field of Chinese “three seas, one nuclear”(shipbuilding industry, maritime equipment, marine development and application of nuclear energy).

Founded in 1953, PLA Military Engineering Institute (abbr. HME) was the predecessor of HEU. In 1970, Harbin Engineering Institute was established at former address. In 1994, the Institute was renamed Harbin Engineering University. In February 1978, the Institute was approved to be the “key” institutes by the State Council. In 1982, the Institute was approved to be one of the few universities that have the authority to grant Master and Doctoral Degrees by the State Council in the first batch. In 1996, HEU became an initial number of the ”211 Projects”, allowing it to be one of the universities to be greatly developed by the government during the “ninth five-year” period. In 2002, Graduation School was approved to set up by Ministry of Education. HEU is a high-level university co-established by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Education, Hei Longjiang Province Goverment and PLA.

The occupied area of HEU is 1.26 million square meters with a building area of 885 thousand square meters. Today the university has 3,064 full-time faculties, of whom 2 are academicians, 267 doctor supervisors, 726 professors and associate professors. There are 23517 full-time students, in which 13705 undergraduates, 7342 postgraduates, 1446 doctoral candidates. Now there are 12 post-doctoral mobile research stations, 25 disciplines conferring doctoral degrees, 93 disciplines conferring master’s degrees (including MBA), and 53 specialties for undergraduates. Professional disciplines covers 7 categories and 37 first level disciplines.

Aiming to build up high-qualified, creative and excellent students, and develop high-level scientific research-oriented university with distinctive characters and established fame, HEU puts emphasis on the development of international cooperation and academic exchange, and has made extensive exchange and cooperation efforts with more than 100 influential universities and scientific research institutions in 30 countries, such as the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and Russia, training more than 1000 international students of different levels from the United States, Britain, Canada, South Korea, Russia, Japan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Thailand, Nepal, India, etc.
