Characteristics of the Specialty

Flexible length of Schooling

Students can start in either spring or fall semester and prolong or shorten the total length of schooling from 3 to 6 years according to their personal situations.

Third Language

Students can choose to learn a third language (English or Japanese) besides Chinese. They are encouraged to take grade or proficiency tests of the third language to strengthen their competitive power for employment.

Concentration

In the 2nd semester of the 3rd academic year, students will have opportunities to take courses on Economy & Trade with Chinese students at School of Business & Management.

Practice & Internship

Students can participate in various practices or internships arranged by ICES with their own will. These practices and internships include language practice in communities or shopping centers, volunteer activities at the Home for the Aged or the Children's Welfare Center, internship in relevant organizations, and etc. 

Student Status Management

Higher-Grade-Transfer Rules

Students, who apply for starting their studies in higher grade, should have studied in a Chinese higher education institute or an oversea institute recognized by the Ministry of Education of China for at least one year; obtained certain HSK certificate; and passed the IICES higher-grade-transfer exam.
Students may start schooling from the 2nd semester with HSK3 certificate, the 3rd semester with HSK4, or the 4th semester with HSK5 or above.
After enrollment, the students should take the exams of the main courses opened in the previous semesters and acquire corresponding credits. The exam fee of each course is RMB 200 or RMB 500.

Up-grading Rules

The freshman who has obtained the HSK4 certificate and required credits, the sophomore who has obtained HSK6 certificate and required credits, or the junior who has earned required credits can move to the upper grade.

Graduation Rules

Students, who have earned required credits, completed pre-graduation internship, passed graduation thesis defense, and obtained HSK8 certificate, will be authorized to graduate and conferred Bachelor Degree of Arts.

Orientation

Shanghai is becoming the International Economy and Trade Center and eager for the talents specialized in such areas. In addition, China is a country with the largest volume of textiles and garments production and trade. The Yangtze River Delta area represented by Shanghai is not only the major production base but also major export base of textiles and garments. Engaging in the trade in this industry in Shanghai is of great opportunities and convenience commercially and geographically. This concentration will fully utilize the advantages of DHU and lay emphasis particularly on the trade of textiles and garments in order to bring up the talents with excellent Chinese language and culture capabilities for international trade in this industry.

Objectives

Train and bring up high-quality and practical talents for the world of international business in order to follow the trend of globalization, talents who have comprehensive Chinese knowledge and skills, possess some second-foreign language capability besides Chinese, and master basic theories of international economy and trade.

Comprehensive Chinese, Chinese Listening & Speaking, Chinese Reading, Audio-Visual-Oral Chinese Course, Chinese Writing, News Listening, Newspaper Reading, Contemporary Chinese Issues, Foreign Languages (second-foreign language: English or Japanese), Sino-foreign language Translation, Computer-based Chinese Word Processing, Modern Chinese, Chinese Literature, Import & Export Practice, Business Negotiation, Foreign Trade Correspondence, Textile Commodities, Culture of Costume, and etc.

Practices

Including Reports on Reading, Chinese E-editing, Translation and Interpretation Practice, Internship on Business and Commerce, Graduation Thesis.

Admission Information of Autumn Semester of 2011

Application Deadline:  on July 31

Please submit the Application Form for Foreigners to Study at DHU, copy of valid ordinary passport, copy of the high school diploma & official transcripts, and pay RMB 600 application fee. Diploma and transcript should be original copies in English or Chinese. Notarized translated copies are also acceptable. Student who wants to start his/her schooling from higher grade should submit HSK certificate and the official one-year study clarification issued by the higher education institutes as well.

Registration Date: In Aug (with passport)

Submit 3 Photos, pay tuition, check passport & visa, purchase insurance, check in the dormitory, take the exam for transferring into higher grade.

Orientation Date: In August (very important)

  1. Non-Chinese citizen in good health
  2. Hign school graduate under the age of 35
  3. Original HSK level 3 or new HSK level 4 (180 marks above)

    A recent passport-sized photo of the applicant

    Original copies of 2 latest works of art, one in pencil sketch and the other in color painting (required by Art-related programs application)
  5. Other materials
    Other requisite certificates or materials, such as testimonials
  6. High school academic transcript
  7. High school graduate certificate
    Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.
