Introduction

This interdisciplinary degree programme combines the subjects of English language and international business, with the aim of producing graduates who have an excellent command of English and a critical awareness of the use of language in a business context.

What knowledge and skills will I acquire? By the time you graduate you should:

  • be able to communicate professionally in English and to use the language confidently in the context of international business and finance;
  • understand the functional aspects of international business (for example international markets and ethical problems facing international organisations);
  • understand and be able to evaluate the application of international business theory within private, public, large and small business sectors

What are my career prospects? 

You will acquire intellectual, interpersonal and technical skills which are highly valued by employers.  Graduate opportunities within the general domain of English and international business include administrative and managerial positions in industry, business, the financial sector, local government, and the civil service.  You may also be able to pursue a career as a professional translator or interpreter.  Additionally, the course provides a foundation for further graduate level study in the subjects of English language and finance.

What will I study? 

At level 1, you will develop a firm foundation in English language, business, finance and economics through the study of:

  • sounds of English
  • economic principles
  • issues in the global economy
  • marketing
  • finance
  • English cultural studies
  • the language of business and finance

At level 2, you will learn more about international business and study the following:

  • translation and interpreting
  • advertising and the media
  • business communication
  • corporate social responsibility
  • international development and finance

In the final year, you will undertake an interdisciplinary research project, spanning both semesters.  Alongside your project, you will learn more about the use of English within a business context.  You will also learn more about international business through the study of:

  • international economic relations
  • international marketing
  • strategic management and business policy

You may also choose between options in:

  • interpersonal communication in the workplace, and
  • language and literature

Academic Requirements:

The University accepts a wide variety of school, college and foundation qualifications such as A-Level, AS-Level, IB and other equivalent overseas qualifications.

English Language Requirements:

All students must have acceptable English language qualifications to study at the University. Various English qualifications are acceptable including:

  • IELTS 5.5 for year 1 entry , or 6.5 for advanced standing; or
  • TOEFL 520 (paper-based), or 190 (computer-based) or 75 (iBT) for year 1 entry; or
  • TOEFL 570 (paper-based), or 230 (computer-based) or 88 (iBT) for advanced standing, or
  • XJTLU English test.

  2. Passport photo
    A recent passport-sized photo of the applicant
  3. English proficiency test certificate
    For example, IELTS or TOEFL, only for applicant whose native language is not English.
  4. Letter of recommendation
    From professor or associate professor or equivalents
  5. High school academic transcript
  6. High school graduate certificate
    Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.
