B. Programme Structure
The English and International Business degree programme has been developed by combining the English language subjects and the international business subjects, with a ratio of 50 percent English language modules to 50 percent international business modules. The English language modules consists of three subjects of study: English language studies, English language skills, and English cultural studies.
The degree programme has a modular structure, with students required to take modules worth 50 credits in years 1, and 2 of their studies (with typically 25 credits per semester) and modules worth 40 in years 3 and 4 of their studies (with typically 20 credits per semester). Students are expected to undertake an industrial placement following year 3. Year 4 includes a final year project worth 10 credits which is split into 5 credits per semester.
The students on this degree undertake the common core of XJTLU year 1, and are required to take a range of modules covering Chinese Culture, English, Mathematics, Physics, and Physical Education in years 1 and 2 of their studies, laying the broad foundations expected for a Chinese undergraduate degree programme. Year 1 of the degree programme, in which the majority of these modules will be delivered, has been accredited by Xi’an Jiaotong University and its content takes into account Chinese Ministry of Education requirements for undergraduate degree programmes.
The English tuition in Year 1 and Year 2 is provided by the English Language Centre. 18 of the 50 credits are spent on English in the 1st year with a further 10 credits of English in year 2. Students will move from tuition in Chinese and English in year 1 to total delivery in English in year 2. The English tuition in year 2 is to provide students with subject specific support to ensure that they have a full understanding of the technical modules being delivered in English.
In Semesters 3 to 8 the core subjects in English and international business are introduced. In the final year, Semesters 7 and 8, students undertake an extended final year project spanning both semesters.
