Chinese Language Program
The College of International Culture and Education of Guangxi Normal University provides non-diploma education in Chinese language and Chinese culture for a period of half a year or longer for foreigners and foreign citizens of Chinese origin whose native tongue is not Chinese, and overseas Chinese.
It has been undertaking the teaching of Chinese as a second language as long as 17 years. All its full-time teaching staff hold a Master’s degree in the area and a certificate in teaching Chinese as second language. They are well-qualified and experienced teachers of Chinese as a second language, who have a wide range of knowledge in the area and varieties of teaching methods. It is equipped with perfect language teaching facilities such as large, medium-sized and small classrooms, multi-functional classroom, language laboratory, reading room, and multi-media facilities. It is designated as an HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) center which provides an HSK test two times a year.


Placement Test
A placement test, both oral and written, is given at the beginning of a new semester to the new students to see the level of their listening, speaking, reading and writing. On this basis, they will be placed in different classes in order for the teachers to teach according to their respective level, thus ensuring the quality of teaching.


Levels and Classes
Classes are usually divided into elementary level, intermediate level, and advanced level, and each level may be subdivided if needed. Students will be recommended to study in a class which fits their level of Chinese according the results of the placement test.


Courses and Textbooks
We highly recommend the textbook series of Chinese as a second language published by Beijing University of Language and Culture for the teaching of language skills, language knowledge, and cultural aspects.
The teaching of Chinese as a second language includes such courses as Basic Chinese, Practical Chinese, and Works from Chinese Literature.

For the long-term program, 1 academic year is divided into 2 semesters, 18 weeks each semester, and 20 class hours each week. The required courses are usually arranged in the morning and the elective courses in the afternoon from Monday through Friday.

There are long-term programs (6 months or longer) and short-term programs (July-August during the summer break, and January-February during the winter break). Courses offered are determined on the basis of the level and request of the students.
Long-term Programs: Elementary Class I (for absolute beginners), Elementary Class II, Intermediate Class and Advanced Class (divided into 4 levels).

Students will be studying in a class according their level of Chinese at the time of enrollment. The required courses for each level are shown as follows:

In addition to the above-listed courses, students of any level are allowed to take such elective courses as Bettering Pronunciation in Chinese, Reading and Writing Chinese Characters, Chinese Calligraphy with Pen, Ancient Chinese Language, A Brief History of China, Chinese Traditional Music, Chinese Opera for Appreciation, Taiji, Chinese Wushu, Chinese Painting, Preparations for HSK Test, etc.. 

A "Study Certificate" will be issued to those who attend classes as required and pass the relevant exams.

Elementary Integrated Chinese
Goal of Teaching:
To enable the students to learn some knowledge about Chinese phonetics,grammar and vocabulary, to have the elementary ability to listen, speak, read and write in Chinese for daily communication, and by the end of this study period to meet the one-year requirements as set in the “Outline Chinese Proficiency Grading” and lay the foundation for them to enter into their special area of study.

Elementary Chinese Conversation
Goal of Teaching:
To enable the students to learn the linguistic and communicative ability in oral communication, to meet the needs of communication in daily life, study and social intercourse.

Goal of Teaching:
To develop the students listening comprehension in verbal communication, which includes such micro-skills as differentiating sounds and tones, hunting for information,associating and guessing, passing over barriers, understanding language situations, making prompt responses, and making summaries.

Elementary Chinese Reading
Goal of Teaching:
Taking into consideration the new words and grammatical items taught in the Integrated Chinese class, to let the students perceive by sight the Chinese characters, words and expressions, paragraphs and passages contained in the written materials and learn about the rules and methods to obtain information from the written materials, to help them consolidate what they have learned before, expand the volume of their vocabulary, and develop their interest in reading Chinese, thus to improve their reading skills and reading comprehension, finally for them to acquire the ability to read Chinese correctly and perfectly.

Intermediate Integrated Chinese
Goal of Teaching:
To further enlarge the students’vocabulary from 2500 to 4500 words, to consolidate, expand and deepen their understanding of the grammatical items, to gradually raise their ability to read Chinese in the original, and to enable them to express themselves correctly and fluently on a certain topic, both oral and written, by
using the words and expressions, grammatical structures and sentence patterns they have learned.

Intermediate Chinese Listening
Goal of Teaching:
To enable the students to understand normal-speed listening materials, coherent and familiar to them in contents in order to prepare to attend normal classes at the various departments.

Goal of Teaching:

Intermediate Chinese Writing
Goal of Teaching:
To review, consolidate and apply the Chinese characters, words and expressions and grammar the students have learned, to enable them to have a good grasp of the stylistic features of such practical writings as narration, exposition, and argumentation,and of the method and skill of writing, to learn to use correctly the Chinese punctuations and writing format, and to develop their ability to express themselves in written Chinese.

Advanced Integrated Chinese
Goal of Teaching:
To enable the students to correctly comprehend language phenomena in Chinese, to understand the implied meaning idiomatic expression, to express themselves correctly and fluently what they hear and what they see, and abstract concepts, to correctly and properly express their views and feelings, and to make their analysis and comment on things and problems.

Form of Teaching:
Small class-size, taking practice and communication as principle, giving the training in reading comprehension expressing themselves in paragraph, and in the meanwhile giving the integrated training in phonology, vocabulary, grammar, and four skills of listening, speaking reading and writing.

Advanced Chinese Listening and Speaking
Goal of Teaching:
To help the students to increasingly raise their ability to express themselves orally at a higher level, to communicate with different types of people in different situations more correctly, properly and fluently; and to strengthen their adaptability, resolution capability and judgment in language practice.

Form of Teaching:
Small class-size, listening to on-the-spot recording of native speakers of Chinese to achieve information and retell the recorded materials by passage, conducting practical and standardized speaking drills.

Advanced Newspaper Reading
Goal of Teaching:
To aim at developing the students ability to read Chinese newspapers and magazines.

Form of Teaching:
Small class-size, intensive and extensive reading based on the textbook and with current newspapers and magazines as supplements, explanation by the teacher of the language points carried in the newspapers and magazines and of reading skills, a large amount of reading practice by the students.

Communicating in Chinese
Goal of Teaching:
To provide the students an opportunity to conduct one-to-one communication with the teacher in order for the students to obtain help as needed by each individual and improve their language competence.
Contents of Teaching: Discussion on certain topics with the help of the teacher, in the course of which the teacher will be able to solve the students’problems arising in the discussion.
Form of Teaching:
One-to-one communication the teacher and each student in the class.


Elective Courses
The College of International Culture and Education offers such 4 elective courses as listed below to meet the needs of the different levels of international students:

1. Intermediate Business Chinese
Goal of Teaching:
To enable those students who have reached the intermediate level of Chinese to have a rough
picture of China's economic conditions and the various types enterprises and companies in China, and to learn about the technical terminology and contents in the field of economics.
Contents and Form of Teaching:
This course aims to enable the international students to know well about business trade, and to engage in various economic activities in China. It deals with what foreigners have to attend to when doing business in China, focusing on the background knowledge of business in China, which covers from the general structure of China's open policy to.China's various business sectors, from China's open markets and various patterns of China's current enterprises and companies to China's understanding of international trade in general. The course adopts the teaching method of combining lectures by teachers and practice by students, and intensive drills of Business Chinese terminology.

2. Advanced Business Chinese
Goal of Teaching:
To get those students who have reached advanced level of Chinese familiar with the various links in business operation, able to apply the professional knowledge and technical terms learned in the classroom, to write business letters, to fill out forms needed in business activities, to work out some business documents, and to conduct simulated negotiation.
Contents and Form of Teaching:
On the basis of what has been learned at the intermediate level, the students will learn how to write international business correspondence in Chinese and to use business terms, phrases and short sentences, including setting up business relations, matters concerning business negotiation such as quality, price and packing of products, and how to write business documents and the basic skills in negotiation. The course adopts the teaching method of combining lectures by teachers and practice by students and intensive drills of business Chinese terminology, requiring the students to used the business they have learned to conduct simulated business negotiation and to hold discussion on the hot spots of international business activities. Some fieldwork is also part of the teaching activities.

3. Intermediate and Advanced Audio-Visual Course
Goal of Teaching:
By audio-visual presentation, specific form and imagination, to show the students the history and current situation of the Chinese society and how the Chinese live, think, behave and pursue in life so that they will further understand what China is really like and what the Chinese are actually like, and have a better understanding of the implication of language related to it.
Contents and Form of Teaching:
This course takes movies, news documentaries and reports on people as live teaching materials to let the students apply the knowledge of language learned from the books in the classroom in the real and natural language situation. The course combines intensive and extensive presentation of audio-visual materials, drilling some language points and sentence patterns, to show the differences between oral and written language, and to further expand their learning of new words and sentences borne out of the contemporary society.

4. Intermediate and Advanced Chinese Culture
Goal of Teaching:
Language, as a means of communication between nations and peoples, it contains rich cultural implications. Therefore, the learning of the Chinese language requires not only the mastery of the basic linguistic skills, but also the understanding of China’s history and culture in the past 5000 years, but also the national psychology and mentality of the Chinese people. The course aims to introduce to the students the various aspects of the Chinese culture with profundity and an easy-to-understand approach, to enable them to have a basic and relatively systematic knowledge of the Chinese culture in its varieties and profundity and as a result to have a good command of the Chinese language.
Contents and Form of Teaching:
With the students' interest and the reality of their level of Chinese as the starting point, to introduce the Chinese culture by adopting interesting stories and legends as the teaching materials and by explaining them in simple Chinese or sometimes by comparison between the Chinese culture and the Western culture to make them more easily understood.
