The College of International Culture and Education

Guangxi Normal University has a long history of international exchange and Cooperation. As far back as 1950s - 1960s, the university’s Yucai campus was the site for Vietnam Yucai School and South Vietnam 9.2 School. It produced thousands of people very useful to Vietnam, 10 of whom have been Vietnamese state leaders, more than 20 government leaders at ministerial level, and others well-known scholars and entrepreneurs. At present, the university is among the most prestigious Chinese universities in Vietnam, which has the largest population of Vietnamese students in China.

Since the implementation of the reform and open policy in China, Guangxi Normal University has been active in expanding its international exchange and cooperation in the fields of education, science and technology, and culture. GXNU has set up collaborative relations with more than 160 universities and research institutes in 36 countries. Each year GXNU sends teachers and students overseas to teach, to further study, and to attend international symposia, and at the same time invites foreign experts and scholars to the university for teaching and exchanges.

GXNU is one of the first 8 universities in China assigned to provide training for the "Chinese Language Teaching Volunteers International" program. GXNU has so far helped to train several groups totaling around 150 volunteers to teach in Nepal and Thailand respectively. In 2006, GXNU has worked together with Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand to set up Confucius Institute; and the joint establishment of Confucius Institute with Hanoi University in Vietnam and with State University of Malang in Indonesia is now under way. The university has been made an advanced unit in China in employing foreign teachers and foreign experts.

Great importance has been attached to the education of international students. In the past 10 years or so, over 2,800 foreign students in total have been studying here on a long time basis and 5,000 on a short-term basis.

Introduction of The College of International Culture and Education

The College of International Culture and Education (CICE) of Guangxi Normal University was established in February 2000, on the basis of the Center for Training Chinese Language as a Second Language and the Center for International Exchanges of Culture and Education which was founded in 1979.

It now consists of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture and the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures, enrolling students to undertake 4-year undergraduate programs or to study in the long-term and short-term programs. It is responsible mainly for the enrollment and teaching of international students and Chinese students studying in the joint-venture education programs.

The college now has a full-time Chinese teaching staff as many as 18 people, of whom there are 1 professor, 5 associate professors, 5 doctors and would-be doctors. The college is equipped with a highly-competent teaching staff, well-qualified administrators, and up-to-date facilities.

It possesses a multi-functional International Exchange Building with a floor space of 15,000 square meters, which is facilitated with a convention hall, multi-media classroom, computer network room, audio-visual room, sound laboratory, reading room, reference library, recreational center, cafeteria, etc.. Its International Service Center prepares rooms of various standards to accommodate around 1,000 people with its good service.

The College of International Culture and Education is making its greatest efforts to improve the students’ Chinese language competency. In addition to classroom activities, it regularly organizes the students to participate various kinds of language practice activities, such as visits to places of historical interest, factories, enterprises and countryside, discussions with Chinese students, various interesting language competitions, New Year and Christmas parties, Chinese performances, ball games, and production of TV programs, etc.. All these activities have won appreciation of the international students.

About School Activities

In addition to Winter Break and Summer Break, there are other holidays such as May 1 International Labor Day and October 1 China’s National Day (3-day holidays respectively), New Year’s Day. Classes remain to continue on the other memorial days and traditional festive days.

There will be organized trips to some places in China for the international students during the winter break and summer break. There will also be some regular field trips for the international students to learn more about the Chinese history and culture and to witness the great changes and achievements made by the Chinese people since the implementation of China’s open policy.

International students are encouraged to participate and display themselves in the university’s annual sport-meet which is usually held around November.

The university students government sponsors varieties of interesting activities every year such as Kara Oke competition, soccer football game, basketball match, which also welcome the participation of international students. It also organizes international students every year to take part in the national art activities and competitions held in Guilin for international students.
