Henan is the origin of Chinese civilization. Over twenty dynasties had their capitals built in or moved to Henan. Of the seven ancient capitals in Chinese history, three were in Henan-they are Anyang capital of Shang dynasty, Luoyang capital of nine dynasties, and Kaifeng capital of seven dynasties.

Henan ranks first in the number of underground cultural relics, and the second in the number of ground relics in China. Rich collections in museums make up one eighth of the total in China with 54 key cultural or historical sites under state protection. The Yin ruins in Anyang were rated by the state cultural and historical relic authorities as the most important one of the one hundred major archaeological discoveries in China in the 20th century. Longmen Grottoes was among the three big grottoes in China, which was placed on the list of world cultural heritage in the year 2000.

Henan is also the hometown of Shaolin martial arts and Chen's style taiji boxing, worthy of the title of "birth place of Chinese gongfu".

More importantly Henan is the root of Chinese Medicine. With ZHANG Zhong-jing the "medicine-sage" as the leader, physicians living in Henan throughout Chinese history have made remarkable contributions to the founding and development of Chinese Medicine, and enjoy worldwide reputation in the medical field. 

With a history of over thousands of years, Chinese Medicine has a complete theoretical system and miraculous effect. It has made an everlasting contribution to the reproduction of Chinese nation. WHO pointed out clearly in 2003 in the GLOBAL STRATEGIES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE that acupuncture and Chinese herbs are drawing international attention, and playing increasingly important role in preserving health of mankind.

According to incomplete statistics, there are presently over 50 thousand Chinese Medicine organizations in over 130 countries or regions offering services yearly to roughly 30% of local people and 70% of Chinese people.

One of the earliest of its kind, Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was approved by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China in 1992 to recruit students of foreign nationalities as well as students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. In nearly fifty years of Chinese Medicine education, the university has always stuck to the principle of "focusing on the grounding, highlighting distinguishing features, and stressing clinical practice". The university has taken the lead in terms of the rate of student employment and number of students pursuing postgraduate studies. The well-designed new campus with multiple functions will offer a more favorable condition for study and living.

The university has turned out over 30 thousand graduates working around the world, and has presently over 10 thousand students on campus. I am pleased to welcome you to our university.
